Chinese world No.11 Li Na maybe hasn’t won the WTA Humanitarian of the Year Award, which went to the hands of Maria Sharapova, but Li’s humanitarian efforts in 2010 deserve utmost respect. Her latest good deed is a 900,000 Chinese yuan (approximately $135,000) donation to an orphanage in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province in China.

Remember that Li donated all her Madrid prize money, which was $57,500 for her quarterfinal showing, to earthquake relief efforts in Yushu County in northwest China. Then later in the year she visited the children of an orphanage in the city of Xining, the victims of the Yushu earthquake, and donated additional $59,000.

During the visit to Xining, Li promised to donate all her China Open prize money as well. She reached the semifinals and gave away $170,000.

  1. Great! Bravo Li! I can’t remember if Li Na or Jie Zheng reached the Wimbledon 2008 semi-final
and the prize money donated to the Chinese area hit by earthquake.

  2. I wished these girls were getting the massive endorsements like Maria, I always see her splashing her money with watches and stuff. I’m sure she donates, but she’s never given her entire prize money to causes has she?

  3. Hannah, Maria is donating a lot, but I also don’t remember her giving away all her prize money. Li and Zheng are truly amazing! As for watches, Maria is the face of Tag Heuer.

  4. Li Na finally did get Maria and Serena-like endorsements later in her career, and should still get them post retirement due to her likability. Just wish Jim Furyk could get a better endorsement than 5 hour energy drink!
