Maria Sharapova overcomes Jarmila Groth in US Open first round

Maria Sharapova at US Open 2010Seed No.14 Maria Sharapova dropped the first set against Jarmila Groth in the first round of the US Open but fought back to eventually win 4-6 6-3 6-1.

The world No.60 Groth, who reached the fourth round at this year's French Open and Wimbledon, wasn’t able to challenge the former champion Sharapova all the way and in the third set Groth's meltdown was evident.

Groth committed considerably more unforced errors than Sharapova, 48 compared to Sharapova’s 17. Groth scored 24 winners to Sharapova’s 19, but 13 of those came in the first set.

And just a quick fashion note – the Nike day dress which looked questionable in the picture looks awesome on Sharapova, it perfectly follows the shape of her body and now there’s absolutely nothing that I don’t like about the dress.

Top seed Caroline Wozniacki played the last match of the night and scored her 14th straight win in the first round of a major with a 6-1 6-1 victory over American wildcard Chelsey Gullickson. (photo: © Neal Trousdale)

Wow, glad Maria won, Groth is such a hard hitter, so it was though for Maria to punch back… And her dress is really pretty, loved the colour :D

LuLinQa, where did you get that Masha's representing USA?

  5. LuLinQa on September 1st, 2010

I was watching Eurosport news and there was a short scene from her press-conference and there was a label with her name, seeded number and in the commons was written USA instead of RUS, so I was like confused. But I later checked her official website and there's written RUS so I dunno, thaht's why I asked here.

I'm so glad she got through this match, I knew it was going to be tough. Her dress is so much nicer on her than how it looked beforehand, just as I thought. Looking forward to seeing how the night dress looks.

I am glad (too) that Maria won. Jarmila plays much better than her ranking shows. Yes, dress looks great on Maria. As we expected :-)

LuLinQa, no wonder they made a mistake. I sometimes forget Maria is Russian as well.

I'm also looking forward to see the night dress on Maria, it should be stunning.

Sharapova's dress was hideous like the one she wore at the Aussie Open. Sharapova is totally overated.

I agree with the writer. Sharapova's day dress looked so much better on her and I just saw her latest night match against Iveta Benesova and I have to say this is the first time I actually like her day dress more than her night dress, although the night dress is beautiful as well.

I think Sharapova's dresses are the most beautiful on this year's US Open followed by FILA collections. What do you think guys?

Ferondi, Sharapova's dresses are very nice and she wears them perfectly, but I always have a soft spot for adidas designs, especially on Maria Kirilenko. Ivanovic and Hantuchova have beautiful dresses, and Wozniacki's Stella McCartney is also stunning.
