Caroline Wozniacki’s Stella McCartney dress for US Open 2010

Caroline Wozniacki has been wearing nice adidas by Stella McCartney dresses but you can’t distinguish one from another and a while ago she promised something exclusive for the 2010 US Open. Browsing the Internet I came across the dress the Dane is supposed to wear at the final Grand Slam of the year.

At first glance the outfit looks plain ugly, in my opinion at least. It reminds me of a bad choice worn to a club. But, I’m a huge believer in Stella McCartney’s taste, and I’m sure the dress will look good on Caroline and in action.

What do you think?

And yes, there is also the white version of the dress, as well as a green and gray one which is the most beautiful. The official name of the piece is Stella McCartney Tennis Performance Dress.

Update: as our reader Cara says, the what I called green and gray dress is actually the black night dress with the new Yellow Stella Sports Bra. Haha it looked green and gray to me. :)

Nervy Svetlana Kuznetsova wins Mercury Insurance Open despite shaky knees

Svetlana Kuznetsova wins Mercury Insurance Open in San Diego

Svetlana Kuznetsova choked for the first time in her life and blew four match points in the second set tiebreak (two of those with double faults), but still the Russian managed to defeat fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska and win the Mercury Insurance Open in San Diego. Final score: 6-4 6-7(7) 6-3.

"My knees were shaking and I couldn't push on my serve and now I know why people double fault on match points," said the unseeded Kuznetsova who wasted leads of 4-0 and 6-3 in the tiebreak.

"She's a great player, a top player," said the world No.10 Radwanska. "Now, she's lost some points and she's behind me [in the rankings]. But in the important moments, she was better."

Both Kuznetsova and Radwanska were playing their first final since Beijing in October, when Kuznetsova beat Radwanska 6-2 6-4. By winning her first title in 10 months, Kuznetsova is projected to rise from No.21 to No.14 in the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour rankings.

Revival of tennis fashion of the past

Sarah for Wilson's "Win a hit with Juan Martin Del Potro" Contest on Facebook

Our avid reader Sarah recently entered Wilson's "Win a hit with Juan Martin Del Potro" Contest on Facebook where you were supposed to take a photo of yourself playing with a new Wilson® BLX tennis racquet. Sarah was determined to come up with the most original idea, and although she didn’t win the grand prize her work deserves a lot of appreciation and so I’m sharing her photos with you.

You know how fascinated I am with the tennis fashion of the past. Sarah did a photoshoot with an 1890s tennis theme and I have to say her idea was very original and she carried it out great. Sarah took the photos at a place called Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, CA. She wanted a grass court because it best fitted with the theme. She did a lot of research before the shoot on what the players wore in those days. She looked at numerous photos of Suzanne Lenglen and Helen Wills Moody and did her best to copy that style and look of play.

Besides Sarah, the credit has to be given to her mother Judith Anderson who took these photos. She is a professional photographer.

During the quarterfinal of the Mercury Insurance Open, Stosur hit no aces and served five double faults, compared to Pennetta’s eight aces and only one double fault. Also, Pennetta had 19 winners and Stosur 12.

The Italian’s opponent in the semis will be Svetlana Kuznetsova. The Russian ended the hopes of qualifier Coco Vandeweghe, who upset third seed Vera Zvonareva in the second round. Kuznetsova beat Vandeweghe 7-5 6-2. (photo by John Bolan)

Agnieszka Radwanska mistakes golf hole with photographer's head

World No.10 Agnieszka Radwanska took some time off from tennis at the Mercury Insurance Open in San Diego and practiced golf hits. She easily managed to hit the target – that is if it was photographer’s head. :)

Radwanska, seeded fourth at the tournament, defeated former world No.1 Dinara Safina in the second round and will play Shahar Peer in the quarterfinals.

Lindsay Davenport on Kim Clijsters' prospects for US Open 2010

Thanks to Jim from KEF Media I had another opportunity to interview Lindsay Davenport, even though I was on vacation at the time. I prepared some questions and Jim forwarded one of them to Lindsay and added one question of his own.

My question was the following: "Kim Clijsters had a historic victory last year at the US Open, what do you think her prospects are this time?" The other question is regarding the importance of the US Open Series in getting players ready for the US Open. Listen to what Lindsay had to say.

Once again, thanks Lindsay and Jim for cooperating with me!

Venus Williams’ EleVen to partner with the Gilt Group

Venus Williams and EleVen collection

Venus Williams launched her EleVen fashion collection in the end of 2007 and it was being sold exclusively at Steve & Barry’s. However, the company went bankrupt the following year and EleVen was left alone.

Venus has now come out with good news during a Q&A for Sports Illustrated, saying that EleVen will partner with the Gilt Group:

As for EleVen, this is really somewhat breaking news, but I will be partnering with The Gilt Group over the next year to host exclusive quarterly sales of the EleVen collection on Gilt.com/EleVen. The first sale is coming later this month before the US Open. You will be able to find out the details, which are coming soon, on my website, Twitter and Facebook. We are also in advanced discussions with a retail partner and as soon as next summer you will likely be able to find EleVen at traditional retail outlets.

Kleybanova upsets top seed Jankovic in round two of San Diego

Alisa Kleybanova

Top seed Jelena Jankovic lost in straight sets in the second round of the Mercury Insurance Open to Alisa Kleybanova, despite leading 4-0 in the first set. Jankovic even had three set points at 5-3, but Kleybanova won eight straight games to take the score to 7-5 4-0 and eventually win the match 7-5 6-2.

The second-ranked Jankovic said she was afraid to run a lot because it was just her first match since injuring her left ankle in Portoroz two weeks ago. The world No.28 Kleybanova defeated Jankovic two times in 2009 and now leads their head-to-head record 3-2.

The 21-year-old Russian, who won her first WTA title in Kuala Lumpur in February, has reached only her third quarterfinal of the season. (photo: John Bolan)
