Ana Ivanovic at the Western and Southern Financial Group Women's Open in Cincinnati

Ana Ivanovic gave us a nice surprise by beating ninth seed Victoria Azarenka 2-6 7-6(6) 6-2 in the first round of the Western and Southern Financial Group Women’s Open in Cincinnati.

The world No.65 Ivanovic, who exited the last week’s tournament in San Diego in the first round, lost the first set in Cincinnati and appeared set for another early loss before rallying to upset the winner of this month’s Bank of the West Classic.

Next for Ivanovic will be 32nd-ranked Yaroslava Shvedova, the winner over Alla Kudryavtseva in the first round. Keep it up, Ana! (photo: © Neal Trousdale)

  1. I am still in total shock over this! Before the match my over/under for the total number of games Ana would win was just 5. I didn’t think she had a chance and needed a miracle to win. This was vintage Ana Ivanovic. Great, crackling forehand and fighting back from a one set, 2-5 deficit.

Now she needs to back it up with a couple of more wins. If she does that, this win may be just what she needed to turn her career around. Only time will tell. But this was a step in the right directions and there are many positives to be happy about. 🙂

  2. I don’t want to put my expectations high, but let’s hope for the best. Ana also defeated Azarenka and Dementieva in Rome, but her old form didn’t stay with her.

  3. Good, but I think Vika was not 100%. Yeah, rather don’t expect too much cos othervise we will be dissapointed.

  4. This is a great win for her, I’m so pleased! I left the match when she was a set and a break down so it was a lovely surprise to wake up and see that she had won. Now onto the next one…

  5. I read some comments on facebook page of Cincy tournament that it was a great match. I am happy that Ana won it (she didn’t fall when Vika lead 6:2, 5:3 and it was tough tie break). We will see what will be in the future. …well I don’t want to jinx. Good luck against Yaroslava Shvedova.

  6. Late to the party due internet connection issues.

Walking into the lions’ den since I’m not a fan Ivanovic.

OK Ms. Marija when your Ana lost in the first round in San Diego, you didn’t even post news on the story, you focus on some photo shoot that she did. Ana has a first round win and you rush to publish the story, Serb bias I take it. Ana may end up winning her second round match up a set and tie at 4, in the second, good for the “Fist Pumping Imbecile” but remember, just because a player has a good tournament -even winning it- doesn’t mean the player is back or that is on top, ask the Italian who won RG 10.

  7. Carlos, I could post 10 articles a day if I had time to cover everything, but the situations is that I have to make a selection. Ana losing in the first round was unfortunately not much of a news at the moment. Ana upsetting Victoria is news. And now she’s won her second round as well. Woohoo!

“just because a player has a good tournament -even winning it- doesn’t mean the player is back or that is on top” – I agree.
