Martina Hingis no longer engaged to Andreas Bieri

Martina Hingis

In March we reported that Martina Hingis would marry Zurich attorney Andreas Bieri, but now we have to say that the tennis star canceled this engagement as well, at least according to Swiss newspaper A-Z.ch. Hingis wasn’t available for comments about the break up, just like her ex fiancé Bieri.

This piece of information is actually more than two weeks old, but I haven't shared it on my blog until now because, hmm, I was probably waiting to hear it was just a rumor. Now I'm pretty convinced it's true. (source: Tennis Grand Stand, photo: Life.com)

Justine Henin books place in 60th final on the WTA Tour

Justine HeninSamantha Stosur

Seven-time Grand Slam champion Justine Henin will have a chance to win her first title since coming out of retirement, having reached the final at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix on her beloved clay. It will be the Belgian’s 60 Tour final and her opponent will be fellow wildcard Samantha Stosur.

The former world No.1 Henin didn’t have a birthday present for Shahar Peer and defeated the Israeli 6-3 6-2 in the semifinals. Even lack of sleep and cold couldn’t stop Henin, who is currently ranked four places lower than Peer.

Australia’s Samantha Stosur reached her eighth final on the WTA Tour with a 7-5 6-3 victory over 138th-ranked qualifier Anna Lapushchenkova. Stosur had to come from 5-2 behind to take the first set. By the way, if you’re interested in reading more about Lapushchenkova, I suggest a short but very informative article at Diane’s blog about women’s tennis.

Although Stosur is in excellent form, having confirmed that with the Charleston title last month, the first meeting with Henin, especially on clay, will be a great challenge. And apparently, the fact that Henin is playing her first tournament on clay in two years will not be an obstacle. In addition, the Belgian won the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in 2007. Iveta Benesova wins Fes for second WTA title

Iveta BenesovaIveta Benesova of the Czech Republic avenged her first-round defeat to Simona Halep in Marbella with a 6-4 6-2 victory over the Romanian in the final of the Grand Prix de SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem in Fes, Morocco.

The 27-year-old Benesova, seeded seventh at the African tournament, had lost an average of only five games per match until the semifinals, and reached the title match with a 6-3 4-6 7-5 win over Alize Cornet.

The 18-year-old qualifier Halep, who upset second seed Patty Schnyder in the quarterfinals, was playing only her third main draw on the Tour. She was a junior world No.1 and is now the youngest finalist on the Tour this season.

The world No.67 Benesova, last year ranked in the Top 30, is now 2-6 in Tour finals. Her first title came in Acapulco in 2004.

Explanation of the tournament’s long and a bit strange name: Princess Lalla Meryem is the first daughter and eldest child of the late King Hassan II of Morocco and sister of Mohammed VI, the current king of Morocco. And one more thing, the tournament, which is the only WTA event in Africa, has a ten-year tradition, but throughout that period it has been located in different Moroccan cities.
