Andrea PetkovicGermany’s No.1 player Andrea Petkovic had four match points against defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, but the Russian scraped through the rain-affected match to reach the third round of the French Open. Kuznetsova had actually lost to Petkovic one, their last meeting in Tokyo in 2009.

The world No.41 Petkovic had triple match point at 6-4 5-4 and another one in the same game. The sixth-seeded Kuznetsova saved them all and won the second set 7-5. The Russian then stormed into a 5-2 lead in the third set, but the decider didn’t end so quickly, as Petkovic saved three match points before Kuznetsova eventually won 4-6 7-5 6-4.

Next for Kuznetsova is fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko, seeded 30th, who beat Yvonne Meusburger 6-3 6-3 in the second round. (photos: Stephane Martinache)

  1. Andrea really should have wrapped that match up in straight sets but all credit to Sveta for digging deep and coming out on top!

That, plus the previous match where she won 12 out of the last 13 games, should have restored a lot of the confidence that she must have lost during her dismal run of form.

She could go further in the tourney now, well, until she loses to Flavia of course!;)

Andrea was on twitter the other night, said she had some time if anyone wanted a Q&A session. She got the usual ‘what is your fav movie/music/player rubbish so i thought “right lets liven this up!”. I said to her “I’ve got one for you. You’ve beaten Flavia twice out of 3 games, does that annoy you as much as it annoys me??” LOL couldn’t help myself!

She replied! Said, “Hate it! She’s one of the coolest girls on the circuit, shame we have to meet so early!” Gotta love her for that 🙂

  2. Tony, thanks for sharing the story! Cool you caught the opportunity on Twitter. I should get more engaged there.

Flavia was good in the 2nd round, 6-1 6-1. I’m wishing her the most of luck in the next rounds.

  3. There is about 40 of the WTA players on there Marija plus who knows how many from the ATP (apart from Roddick,i don’t follow any of the men).

To be honest, very few of them ever reply to anyone that tweets them, i guess it’s impossible to answer all when you have 1000s of followers!

The lower ranked players seem to be the ones that will speak to you, which is cool.

Flavia still marching on! Reckon she has a great chance of beating Caro too the way she’s playing 🙂

  4. Tony, I like Twitter as a way to communicate with your fans (when you’re a tennis star) and to connect with the players (when you’re a tennis fan). It’s reasonable they can’t always reply to comments, but still it’s cool that we get to read their personal messages.
