Kim Clijsters

The left foot injury Kim Clijsters sustained during the Fed Cup tie against Estonia last month has taken its toll and now it’s confirmed that the Belgian will miss the 2010 French Open.

The world No.10 Clijsters hasn’t played the French Open since reaching the semifinals in 2006 and will be replaced by Stephanie Dubois this year. However, the Belgian two-time Grand Slam champion is working on being ready for the season on grass and is expected to play at Easbourne prior to Wimbledon.

The latest news is also that Sania Mirza, Urszula Radwanska, Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Sabine Lisicki will also miss Roland Garros and will be replaced by Katie O’Brien, Anne Keothavong, Ekateryna Bychkova and Johanna Larsson. (source: On the Baseline, photo by our reader Tony)

  1. Good choice…rest up for the hard courts and Wimbledon!

It seems JJ made the right choice to lose in Madrid! She should start training at RG so that she can reach our expectations–Winning the title!

  2. Shame Kim won’t be there, we want ALL the top players at the Slam events.

What with injuries, illness& players out of form, RG this year could be the most wide open for many years. Would be no surprise to see it won by an outsider!

  3. Tony, you’re right, anyone could turn out to be the winner. Favorites are still Serena, Dementieva, Henin, Venus, maybe Jankovic, Stosur…

  4. This is a wise decision by Kim. I would much prefer to see her fully fit when she comes back instead of risking further injury when the foot isn’t fully healed. Hopefully come Wimbledon she’ll be back to herself.

Marija, do you think Dementieva is one of the favourites for the title? I would like to think so but with the way she has played in the last few months the chances of her ever winning a slam seem to be getting slimmer and slimmer 🙁 I can still hope though!

  5. Bróna, I think she is, but the problem is that the number of favorites is huge, or viewed from a different perspective non-existent, as anyone could win the title.

  6. I think it is not so wide open. As I’ve already mentioned, I think Henin or JJ have the biggest chances, although there are many underdogs which might come out as the winner. I agree with Brona, Dementieva did not prove worthy of winning a grand slam thus far…who know, maybe her training for RG is going well and she’ll play well. Not sure about the sisters. Have not seen top form game, I think they’ll save up for what they are good at: Wimbledon. Both are very beatable on clay. As for Stousar, not sure really…I think many players can still beat her–Rezai, Safarova, Petrova, Ivanovic.

  7. I agree with bb. This is going to be mainly about Henin and the rest. I think players who should do pretty well are Jankovic, Stosur, Petrova (if the nerves hold). Williams sisters are always lacklustre on clay, I am surprised that Venus was able to make it so far in Madrid but then again, look who she was up against…
The Williams will be a major threat at Wimbly, no doubt, which is where I think Elena’s game could work well, too. But to be honest, Elena’s mental game is not strong enough to win a major.

  8. I agree with marine about Elena. She does not have the capacity to win a GS. The sisters will certainly do well on grass, which is why they always fall out early at the French. Stousar will probably do well since clay suits her game, but I think a GS title for her is far from sight at the moment. Obviously, Henin is the biggest specialist on clay and will use the experience gained to her advantage, but she played so little this year. She played very little on clay, and lost early in Rome and Madrid which makes me question whether she is ready to come back strong on her “home” court. She did win Stuttgart, but that was pretty long ago. I think Ivanovic can do well, since her game was on the rise since Rome. The problem with her is that she will have to play better players right at the beginning which is challenging, but she proved capable in Rome though. As for JJ, I have my cards on her. I hope she wins since her time has come and clay is also her specialty. She will certainly not lot players such as Rezai, Maria (the Spanish one which beat her in Rome) or Stousor outplay her at a Grand Slam.

What does everyone else thing? What about you Marija?

  9. I think that everything you BB and Marine said is true, but about Elena, given the lack of real favorites she could have yet another chance, although she’s just one of many that I would name as possible champions. JJ could be beaten by anyone, and could beat everyone, that means I wouldn’t be surprised to see her defeated by any player. However, to see her go all the way to the title would be a surprise, although a nice one!
