Ana Ivanovic beats Elena Vesnina at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia round one
Prior to her first match at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia Ana Ivanovic had lost nine of her last 11 matches, so the victory in the first round of the clay-court tournament in Rome is kind of a relief. Plus, it’s not just any kind of victory. The former world No.1 Ivanovic defeated Elena Vesnina of Russia, who is at No.32 ranked 26 spots higher than the Serb. And that’s not all, Ivanovic won in straight sets 6-1 6-3. And the icing on the cake is that Ivanovic's serve wasn’t broken at all during the encounter with Vesnina, even better, she didn’t even face break points.
It was the first career meeting between Ivanovic and Vesnina. Vesnina was a semifinalist in Ponte Vedra four weeks ago, and had won five of her last seven matches before losing to Ivanovic.
Ivanovic's opponent in the second round will be ninth seed Victoria Azarenka of Belorussia. They have played only once so far, last year at the French Open, and Azarenka won in straight sets. (photo: © Neal Trousdale)
Best match from Ana since, at least the Stosur match at Wimbledon last year. Loved the serve and forehand from Ana today. Where has this been the past two years?
I am trying to not get my hopes up for Ana beating Vika tomorrow, but I am more confident about her chances then I was at the beginning of today. I so badly want to see her beat a top ten player soon. It would be a huge boost to her confidence and game. Maybe tomorrow is the day. Ajde!
I am thrilled to hear the good news!! It is indeed exciting! I wish she plays the way she did in her next round against Vika. If she plays the way she did in her previous match, she is the favorite. I hope this victory was not a fluke!

Jacob, I was thinking the same thing, she should stay away from too many colors. Keep it simple.
Good news at last. I am a bit sceptical about her chance to win over Victoria but if she plays her A game, she can do it. I think in Ana's case it's all about the belief in her abilities.
