Jelena Jankovic unchallenged by Daniela Hantuchova at Roland Garros

Jelena JankovicFourth-seeded Jelena Jankovic cruised to a 6-4 6-2 victory over seed No.23 Daniela Hantuchova and advanced to the French Open quarterfinals where she will play the winner of the match between world No.107 Jarmila Groth and world No.36 Yaroslava Shvedova.

Slovakia’s Hantuchova had only one break point during the match, which she didn’t convert, and Jankovic was steadily moving towards victory. The Serb broke Hantuchova for a 5-4 lead and then won her service game to take the opening set. In the second set, Jankovic broke Hantuchova in the first and third games, then established a 4-0 lead, and even though she blew one match point at 5-2 on Hantuchova’s serve, she used her service game to finish the match. Hantuchova made twice as much unforced errors as JJ, 16-8.

Jankovic has a perfect 4-0 record against Groth, and 2-1 record against Shvedova, whom she will more likely play in the quarters. Shvedova defeated Jankovic in the second round of the US Open last year, after three sets and two tiebreaks. (photo: Stephane Martinache)

Samantha Stosur ends Justine Henin's reign at Roland Garros

Samantha StosurSeventh seed Samantha Stosur prevented four-time Roland Garros champion Justine Henin from winning her 25th straight match in Paris and defeated the Belgian 2-6 6-1 6-4 in the fourth round. It’s Henin’s first loss at Roland Garros since 2004.

The 22nd-seeded Henin, who dropped a set for the first time in five years in Paris against Maria Sharapova in the previous round, nullified Stosur's serve to break the Australian twice and win the opening set 6-2. But determined Stosur came out strong in the following sets, and fought her way past the seven-time Grand Slam champion.

Last year’s semifinalist Stosur will play world No.1 and top seed Serena Williams in the quarterfinals, who defeated Shahar Peer 6-2 6-2. Williams struggled to hold serve at times and was broken twice by the 18th-seeded Peer, but made an impressive six breaks of her own to advance to the last eight. (photo: Stephane Martinache)

Meet Shahar Peer’s family and her Israeli background

Here’s a nice eight-minute video about Shahar Peer and her life in Israel. Her mother and father are talking about Shahar’s career and how the fact that she’s Israeli influenced it (of course, they’re referring to Dubai). You also get to see Shahar’s grandmother recalling her six months in the Auschwitz concentration camp and the video coverage of the annual March of the Living.

World No.18 Shahar Peer is awaiting her fourth round meeting with top-ranked Serena Williams at the French Open. Shahar defeated Nuria Llagostera Vives in the first round, Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the second, and seed No.13 Marion Bartoli in the third. (via Forty Deuce)

Nadia Petrova beats Venus Williams to advance to French Open quarters

Nadia PetrovaSeed No.19 Nadia Petrova survived three match points against home favorite Aravane Rezai in the third round, but her next match against second seed Venus Williams saw less drama as the Russian won 6-4 6-3 to advance to the French Open quartefinals. It’s Petrova’s first win over Venus in their five meetings (this fifth match was their first on clay).

In the quarterfinals, the 2003 and 2005 French Open semifinalist Petrova will play fifth seed Elena Dementieva, with whom she is tied at 7-7 in career meetings.

Third-seeded Caroline Wozniacki earned her quarterfinal berth the tough way as she played the longest match of the 2010 French Open so far to beat seed No.14 Flavia Pennetta 7-6(4) 6-7(5) 6-2. Wozniacki’s next opponent will be Francesca Schiavone, seeded 17th. (photo: © Neal Trousdale)

Justine Henin edges Maria Sharapova to reach Roland Garros fourth round

Justine HeninThe third round match between Justine Henin and Maria Sharapova was suspended due to darkness on Saturday, with each player having won one set, and when the play resumed today Henin had the edge and defeated Sharapova 6-2 3-6 6-3. If the third set had been played on Saturday, Sharapova could have gone all the way to victory, but as her momentum was stopped, pretty unsurprisingly the four-time French Open champion Henin won. However, Sharapova can be proud of the fact that she became the first player to take a set from Henin at Roland Garros in five years.

The 22nd-seeded Henin, who extended her winning run at Roland Garros to 24 matches, will play seventh seed Samantha Stosur in the fourth round.

Fifth seed Elena Dementieva became the first player to enter the quarterfinals of the 2010 French Open, with a 6-1 6-2 victory over South African qualifier Chanelle Scheepers, ranked 131st, who had upset Gisela Dulko earlier in the tournament. Dementieva’s opponent in the quarters will be either Venus Williams or Nadia Petrova.

Maria Kirilenko, the winner over defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in the third round, was beaten by Francesca Schiavone 6-4 6-4. Schiavone's next opponent will be the winner of the match between Caroline Wozniacki and Flavia Pennetta. (photo: Ralf Reinecke)

Justine Henin and Maria Sharapova waiting for the deciding set

Justine HeninMaria Sharapova at the 2010 French Open

The clash of the week between Justine Henin and Maria Sharapova in the third round of the French Open was suspended at 6-2 3-6 as the darkness and lurking rain would ensure the third set could not be finished on the Court Philippe Chatrier.

The four-time champion Henin, seeded 22nd this year, was in command during the first set. Sharapova didn’t convert any of her four break points, while Henin used both her chances to break and won the first set 6-2. Sharapova was trying, but wasn’t aggressive enough and hit three winners in comparison to Henin’s nine.

The 12th-seeded Russian then revived her aggression in the second set, and finally converted a break point, her eighth, to take a 5-3 lead and serve for the set. That final game of the second set Sharapova won to love.

Afterwards, today’s part of the match ended, on Sharapova's momentum, but tomorrow is another day and the final outcome is absolutely uncertain. (photos: Ralf Reinecke, Stephane Martinache)

Nadia Petrova sends Aravane Rezai home after 6-7 6-4 10-8 epic

Nadia PetrovaThe third round between Nadia Petrova and Aravane Rezai was suspended at 6-7(2) 6-4 7-7 on Friday due to darkness and both players went to sleep knowing they had blown three match points. The match was continued today and the 19th-seeded Petrova finished it in just 15 minutes, breaking the 15th-seeded Rezai for a 9-8 lead and then serving out the match.

Russia’s Petrova, who was semifinalist at Roland Garros in 2003 and 2005, will play second seed Venus Williams in the fourth round. Petrova has never defeated Williams in their four meetings, but none of them were on clay. (photo: Stephane Martinache)

Maria Kirilenko dethrones Svetlana Kuznetsova at Roland Garros

Maria KirilenkoSvetlana Kuznetsova may have survived four match points against Andrea Petkovic in the second round of the French Open, but the defending champion was not as lucky in the next round and fell on the third match point by fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko.

The sixth-seeded Kuznetsova had a point for a 3-0 lead in the third set, but seed No.30 Kirilenko won four games in a row. Kuznetsova then had a chance to level at 5-5, but that was not to happen as Kirilenko held her nerve and recorded one of the best wins of her career to finish the match 6-3 2-6 6-4 and reach the fourth round of the French Open for the first time.

"I mean, it was very hard to defend my title with the tennis I have been playing this season," said Kuznetsova, who also lost to Kirilenko in the second round of Rome earlier this month.

Venus and Serena advance on Day 6 of the French Open

Serena Williams at the 2010 French Open

It took top seed and world No.1 Serena Williams just 55 minutes to win her second round match against Julia Goerges 6-1 6-1 at the 2010 French Open. Serena made no double faults in the encounter postponed by rain, compared to Goerges’ five, and hit just four unforced errors, compared to Goerges’ 20. Serena’s opponent in the third round will be seed No.29 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who beat Jill Craybas 6-4 6-1.

Second-seeded Venus Williams also advanced, but to the fourth round, with a 6-3 6-4 victory over No.26 seed Dominika Cibulkova. The Slovakian played the semifinals last year in Paris, and entered the match with a 1-0 record against Venus, but the American hit 20 winners, twice as many as Cibulkova, and reached her first fourth round at the French Open since 2006.

Maria Sharapova and Justine Henin won their second rounds stopped by darkness yesterday and ensured a blockbuster third round match at the French Open. Both Sharapova and Henin advanced with the score 6-3 6-3: the 12th-seeded Sharapova defeated Kirsten Flipkens, the 22nd-seeded Henin defeated Klara Zakopalova. (photo: Stephane Martinache)

Jelena Jankovic battles past Kaia Kanepi for French Open round three

Jelena Jankovic at the 2010 French OpenSerbia’s Jelena Jankovic fought hard to avoid the fate of countrywoman Ana Ivanovic and survive the challenge of Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi to reach the third round of the 2010 French Open.

The fourth-seeded Jankovic cruised through the first set, before losing the second set to the 118th-ranked qualifier Kanepi, who was a Top 20 player a year ago. In the decider, Jankovic couldn’t capitalize on her 4-2 lead right away,  but from 4-all she confidently finished the match 6-2 3-6 6-4 and leveled her career record against Kanepi at 1-1.

Jankovic’s opponent in the third round will be seed No.27 Alona Bondarenko.

Additional info: This is not related to this match and Roland Garros, but it is to Jankovic. Remember Jankovic's imitation of Ivanovic's fist pumping? Well, both were asked about the incident, and their comments are hilarious. Like none of them wanted to comment on it, but of course they couldn't help it. As you can imagine, Ivanovic had more control over herself. Read on. (photo: Stephane Martinache)
