Ana Ivanovic

Ana Ivanovic vs. Agnieszka Radwanska was a highly-anticipated Miami encounter as we all wanted to see whether Ivanovic could follow up her second-round victory over qualifier Pauline Parmentier (yes, nowadays we count such wins when it comes to Ana) with a victory over Radwanska – and, unfortunately, the answer is “no”.

Radwanska is ranked ninth, seeded sixth at the Sony Ericsson Open, and is coming off her semifinal appearance at Indian Wells last week. However, Ivanovic had a 3-1 record against the Pole and with the new coach by her side we were hopeful Radwanska could be a surmountable obstacle. Still, the Serb, who was believe it or not seeded at the Sony Ericsson Open, fell to Radwanska 7-5 7-5. (photo: Twenty90seven)

  1. Even though she lost this match I think we can see some improvement already. She came close to Radwanska and the result is nothing to be ashamed of because she has been playing well recently. Hopefully in her next tournament she can go a bit further though.

  2. Bróna, I agree, there is some improvement, it’s not too noticeable yet; the things are hopefully progressing slowly but surely.

Jacob, really? I’m glad to hear that. You see, I always put the link to the sources of my photos. As of recently, I got in touch with a few people on Flickr and they gave me the right to use their photos.

  3. I disagree, I didn’t see any improvements. Just because the score was close doesn’t mean there was improvements. The scoreline was pretty misleading. Just look at the stats. Ana was at 59% on 1st serve %, which is not good and even worse, she was broken 7 times. Anybody who was following that match who’s a Ana fan had to be cringing everytime she serve because she had a very difficult time holding it. The only reason why the score was close and Ana wasn’t blown off the court was because A-Rad’s serve was awful too. I don’t see how Ana made any progress. If anything, she is getting worse.

Now it’s time to add another tournament to her schedule between now and Fed Cup. I am happy that she added Stuttgart in late April but I would love to see her add another until then such as Ponte Vedra, Marbella, Fes or Barcelona. She is lacking match play badly and really needs to get more matches in so she can work on her game and build confidence.

  4. Curtis, I know her serving stats were awful, I was following the match myself but when I say there were improvements I mean that she came close to a top 10 player. Last week she won 6 games when she lost against Sevastova but this week she managed to win one match in straight sets and she gave a top 10 player who has been playing well lately a good match. It’s not as if her serving problems are anything new, her ball toss hasn’t been right for ages. There are always so many breaks in women’s matches anyway.

  5. Come on, Curtis, she was beaten by a top 10 player. So Radwanska was the one who had a match to lose more than Ana. The results indicates she put up a decent fight. As I said before, I think Ana is getting there. I think she and her coach need to work out what to do to get her 100% back on track. I believe she can do it, but these things don’t happen overnight.

  6. Hmm, I see. Well, I do softly-softly approach with Justine which also works 😀 As for Ana’s losing streak I think this is a test of her endurance and fighting spirit.

  7. LOL Marija, true. 😛

Don’t get me wrong, I loved the fact that Ana put up a fight and this was an improvement over the Sevastova match, but it’s nothing really to get excited about. It was just too bad she couldn’t at least took a set.

BTW, she’s out of Fed Cup now due to her form. Hoping she definitely adds something now. That would be great. 🙂

  8. Curtis, yes, but I feel it’s better she’s out of Fed Cup. Her last Fed Cup appearance was a disaster, and I think it put even more pressure on her. Sometimes it’s good to say no.
