Venus Williams ends Shahar Peer's run at Dubai Championships

Venus Williams

Venus Williams reached the final of the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships by defeating surprise semifinalist Shahar Peer in the modest surroundings of Court Two, the court of choice because of safety reasons.

Third-seeded Williams defeated Peer 6-1 6-4 amid tight security that surrounded the Israeli all week. Even though Peer’s appearance in Dubai had to be accompanied by her being kept separate from other players, she enjoyed one of the most successful tournaments of her career.

"It was a different experience but a nice one," said world No.22 Peer who upset three seeds on her way to the semis. "I'm sure I will remember this tournament for the rest of my life."

Reigning champion Venus Williams will play fourth seed Victoria Azarenka in the final, as the Belorussian defeated seed No.7 Agnieszka Radwanska 6-3 6-4 in the final four. Williams and Azarenka have met only once so far – two years ago at the Beijing Olympics and the American won that match. (photo by our reader Bobby)

Good job Venus for winning the Dubai tournament
6-3, 7-5, Azarenka put up a good fight, gosh
Eurosport did a good job in showing this match.
It kept me on edge, especially seeing how
Venus was being broken in the 2nd set by
Azarenka like how she was yesterday against by
Peer. Dang it was 3-1, and Venus clearly should
have gone up 4-1 but lost the points and then
at 3-2 when it was 40-15 on her serve Azarenka
won the points and was back on serve at 3 all.
And it kept getting tight, seeing Venus go for
broke and trying to hit the aces 7 in total
in which she did. I was really worried this
would go to a tie breaker, or 3rd set in favor
for the 2nd set to Azarenka. Because it was
the 2nd time Azarenka coach came out there to
give her advice even after she broke back.
I really didn't like that honestly, and I thought
Venus should have done the same thing to but
Venus really didn't need David Witt, or her
Father to tell what she didn't already know
about Azarenka's game. And it was awesome to
see how Venus let Azarenka pick the winning
ticket for the draw for the 2 million at the
end of the ceremonies, you could tell she was
a gracious person and she knew she felt sorry
for Azarenka, even though she likes to win
Venus. I'm happy for you Venus!
