Russian Elena Dementieva won the Medibank International Sydney title for the second successive year with a 6-3 6-2 victory over Serena Williams in the final.

Williams was troubled by a sore left knee, but said to have suffered just a little bit and gave all the credit to Dementieva, who won the match on the first of her three match points.

The American is not worried about her fitness for the upcoming first Grand Slam of the season and said that the knee hurts just a little bit and that strapping can ease the pain.

  1. Congrats and YAY for Elena for starting the year off right. I really want to her win a GS!! She’s always so close! Glad she converted on her first match point.

  2. Well done, Elena. She is in a great shape and was playing really well. I really wish her to win the AO, she would soooooooo deserve it.

  3. Elena really took it to Serena in this match, I was very impressed. She played a more varied game by moving to the net and using more spins to change pace and create angles, even on her serve! However, it’s the mental and not the physical when it comes to her not having won a slam yet (she tends to become more one dimensional when she’s nervous also); and I highly doubt she’ll win in Melbourne. If she’s able to make 2nd round and beat Justine then I might change my mind.

  4. Yeah, I think you’re right Ella. Elena at slams is not the same player as at other tournaments. But I think something must have improved as we saw her winning the Olympics in a very impressive way. Nevertheless, I highly doubt she will beat Justine. As a fan it will be sad for me to watch this match as I hoped both players would meet later on in the tournament. It’s going to be an exciting grandslam, which haven’t happened for a while. Well, that said, last US Open was cool.
