Serena and Venus Williams to face in Sony Ericsson Championships final

The Williams sisters

The Williams sisters saw off their semifinal opponents to reach the final of the $4,550,000 Sony Ericsson Championships – Doha 2009.

Jelena Jankovic entered the semifinals more due to luck than anything else. She lost the matches she played against healthy opponents, and won two thanks to injured Dinara Safina and Caroline Wozniacki. Today she won the first set but eventually lost to defending champion Venus Williams 5-7 6-3 6-4, who has thus moved to the finals.

Venus will next play sister Serena Williams, who had a 6-4 0-1 retirement victory when Caroline Wozniacki pulled out with a left abdominal strain after just 45 minutes of play. It is yet another unfortunate injury for Wozniacki this week, who had been troubled by a leg injury throughout the tournament.

Serena leads an all-time record against Venus 12-10, and is coming into the encounter with three successive victories over her sister, including the extremely tight one here in Doha a few days ago. (photo via Sony Ericsson WTA Tour)

Nikita, I also think Serena will win. I'm proud she reached the final because I said a few days ago that she was my favorite for the title.

    Once again…

    I think pro/anti- Williams supporters can unite to applaud them based on one common agreement;

Their remarkable consistency on the 'Big Stage(s)' of tennis.

That's true, Zuleika. And one more thing, unlike other players, you can never count the Williamses out.

Hmmm, things will be very interesting once the Williams are gone, just imagine… What if we had another game drought like the past year (after Justine left)?

But just on that note, I think the sisters possess the formula for the perfect tennis player. Venus's grace and elegance on the court coupled with Serena's power and dominance; or I suppose Serena with her mouth closed.

I know a lot of people don't like them, but they are definitely one of the most important, if not the most important, women's tennis players at the moment.

Yes, agreed with Nikita and Zuleika.. And you Marija. Im scared for when they retire, what will happen to womens tennis? However, i think were safe for the next two years, plus

Don't be scared, you never know what surprises the future holds. Am I being philosophical? :)

To an extent Marija; I say that for good reason- I'm not sure if that vision is transcendental Marija :) , the near future hasn't been surprising us lately.

yes, they are fantastic players!! but i can't see the grace in them!

  13. marine on November 1st, 2009

Nacho, there is grace but only in the one of them, the other one is full of arrogance. I don't think I need to say which one's which.

    lol… i got it marine!!
