Defending champion Jelena Jankovic moved into the second round of the Kremlin Cup by beating Yaroslava Shvedova 6-4 5-7 6-1. Kim Clijsters also won her opening-round match on Tuesday, defeating Meghann Shaughnessy 6-2 6-2 at the BGL Luxembourg Open.

Shvedova had upset Jankovic in the second round of the US Open in September, but the Serb avenged the defeat by winning five successive games in the third set to defeat the Kazakh in Moscow. Jankovic’s next opponent will be Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic.

At the BGL Luxembourg Open, the other tournament played this week, second seed Kim Clijsters won her eighth straight singles match and the first one since capturing the 2009 US Open title. It’s worth noting that the Belgian is a five-time champion of the Luxembourg tournament.

Reminder: At the Kremlin Cup, the second-seeded Jankovic is competing with Vera Zvonareva and Agnieszka Radwanska for the remaining spot in Doha.

  1. It would be nice for Kim to do well. Since she is limiting her schedule, she will need to win the tournaments she plays to go higher in the rankings. It will be interesting to see what will happen at Moscow. I couldn’t stay up to see Jankovic play so I don’t know if her arm seemed to be bothering her or not (the injury at Tokyo). The race to Doha is exciting this year, right up until the last moment. Odd. the men’s has ended up that way to.

  2. Jankovic’s dress is so nice! The shimmering at the bottom with layers makes it awesome! And, purple is always great!

  3. Kim is definitely a supermummy, like a power ranger. 🙂 She could do well in Moscow, why not.

Macho Nacho, I also love the dress. It’s the first outstanding ANTA dress.

  4. I didn’t expect Jankovic to qualify this easily. That is, I didn’t expect Zvonareva to win only 2 games against Pironkova.

  5. GO KIM AND JJ!

My two favourite players on tour at the moment! I hope Ana steps up her game and comes strong to the US Open since Justine is coming back and will murder all the top players on court. I do find it weird that she is comingi back as she did make it clear that she will not return to professional tennis. Kimmy must have had a positive influence over her decision!

Thank again for this article Marija! All the best!

  6. I like Ana,too! And the Belgians, woo hoo, the next year will be their year. And maybe the year of Venus’ ressurection, too, if she is really that serious about what she says. I also like Wozniacki, used to like Kuzy but not anymore after her vicious comments after losing at US Open.

  7. Bb, thank you for your support. By the way, you must have meant the Australian Open.

Marine, 2010 could easily be the year of Belgian tennis, with Henin, Clijsters, and now even Wickmayer on their side.
