Tamira Paszek to receive no ban for illegal treatment

Tamira PaszekThe disciplinary committee of Austria's anti-doping agency decided that Tamira Paszek should not be blamed for the blood reinjection, even though the treatment was illegal.

In July, the 18-year-old Paszek’s blood was taken for enrichment and later reinjected in her lower back. The procedure of reinjecting one's own blood is considered a violation of anti-doping rules.

Tamira Paszek has ended her season in August, because of the injury. Actually, she hasn’t played since retiring in the Wimbledon opening round. (photo courtesy of Women Who Serve)

Jelena Jankovic bows out in US Open second round

Jelena Jankovic at the 2009 US OpenThe red ANTA dress brought Jelena Jankovic no luck as she made her earliest US Open exit since 2004. The last year’s finalist fell to world No.55 Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 6-3 6-7(4) 7-6(6).

The seesaw match featured a total of 14 breaks of serve. Jankovic was on the brink of defeat on multiple occasions, but managed to crawl back and even had two match points in the hard-earned third-set tiebreak. The Serb failed to convert both and Shvedova sealed victory with an ace on her first match point.

Video overview of 2009 US Open women’s tennis fashions

We’re enjoying a rich array of styles at the 2009 US Open and here’s a short video with comments, presenting what women’s tennis players have been wearing at the last major of the year.

My favorite has to be Maria Sharapova, followed by Ana Ivanovic (like it’s relevant, she didn’t even get to wear the lighter version) and Bethanie Mattek Sands (yes, I like the socks! :) ).

Oudin ends Dementieva's title hopes in US Open second round

Elena DementievaWorld No.70 Melanie Oudin upset fourth seed Elena Dementieva 5-7 6-4 6-3 in the second round of the US Open.

The American 17-year-old had never before this week won a US Open match. Actually, her first wins at a Grand Slam came at this year's Wimbledon, when she impressively reached the fourth round.

Dementieva was one of the favorites for the title, but instead Oudin handed the Russian her joint-earliest ever exit at the US Open.

Melanie OudinOudin’s opponent in the third round will be either three-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova or another US teenager Christina McHale.

Safina or Sanowa? Richard Williams would say "whatever"

Richard WilliamsRichard Williams, the father of Serena and Venus Williams, is either playing a game on us or he really can’t remember the name of the top-ranked women’s tennis player.

"I think she's playing great tennis," Richard said about Dinara Safina. "I think she deserves to be No. 1. I'll tell ya something else, no one wants to play Sanowa, or whatever her name is. That girl hits that ball."

Is it possible that he can’t remember the simple word "Safina"? Hehe, whatever, he made me laugh, plus, Safina received a compliment – so it's all good. (Observer via Forty Deuce)

Kim Clijsters keeps rolling, moves into US Open round three

Kim ClijstersFormer world No.1 Kim Clijsters has been having an amazing comeback, and has now upset Marion Bartoli for the second time since returning to the Tour.

The 14th-seeded Bartoli fell to Clijsters 5-7 6-1 6-2 in the second round of the US Open, less than a month after losing to the Belgian in Cincinnati.

The 26-year-old Clijsters is playing just her third event after a two-year-long break and a child birth, and has so far seen nothing but success.

Clijsters’ next opponent will be compatriot Kirsten Flipkens, ranked 93rd in the world. (photo via Sony Ericsson WTA Tour)

Ana Ivanovic crashes out in US Open first round

Ana Ivanovic at the 2009 US OpenAna Ivanovic’s career was in a downfall, but with the loss in the US Open first round, it has finally hit the ground.

We had been fearful we wouldn't even get the chance to see both of Ana Ivanovic's US Open dresses in action, but Ana’s loss in the first round is a surprise nevertheless, even though it was to a tricky opponent, world No.52 Kateryna Bondarenko.

The 11th-seeded Ivanovic lost the match in a third-set tiebreaker, having even had a match point at 6-5 in the tiebreak. Final score: 2-6 6-3 7-6(7).

Here’s the most telling part of the post match presser, where the former world No.1, now ranked 11th, sums up her issues.

Q. Is it possible you could be thinking about it too much?

ANA IVANOVIC: Well, I think I've been thinking about everything too much and trying to address lots of issues with my game, and at the moment I feel like I have a plan in place and I know what I have to do in each area of my game. But just at the moment I think it's a little disbalanced. My fitness is at one level, mind at another, my game is at another level. I think these all these things have to marry to get into the right direction and have to fit.

Safina almost said goodbye in the first round, Kuznetsova cruises

Svetlana Kuznetsova and Dinara SafinaTop seed Dinara Safina was almost taken out in the first round of the US Open, while her fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, seeded sixth, advanced to the second round much more easily.

The world No.1 Safina double faulted to lose the first set tiebreak, having had four set points, to 167th-ranked Olivia Rogowska of Australia. Safina then hit back to win the second set, but again had to dig deep in the third set to eventually clinch a 6-7(5) 6-2 6-4 victory.

Sixth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, the 2004 US Open champion, was broken early in her first-round match against Julia Goerges, but recovered to score a 6-3 6-2 victory.

Jelena Dokic loses in US Open first round, determination still there

Jelena DokicJelena Dokic hadn’t played since a first-round loss at Wimbledon and was unable to shake off the rust of the two-month layoff, losing to Kirsten Flipkens 6-3 6-4 in the opening round of the US Open.

The 26-year-old committed 41 unforced errors, nine double faults and no aces in the match against the 93rd-ranked Flipkens.

Dokic had a spectacular career revival at the start of the season, but later had to make another break from tennis, because of mononucleosis.

Despite yet another disappointment and unlucky course of events in her career, Dokic is determined to rebound and play well the rest of the season.

"It counts how many times you get up, not how many times you fall down," said the Australian. (source: Reuters, photo: Ralf Reinecke)
