Defending champion Dinara Safina fell 3-6 6-2 6-4 to Aravane Rezai of France in the second round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

The world number one and top seed hit 17 double faults against the 39th-ranked Rezai, including misfiring four straight serves at one point in the third set.

And of couse, I simply adore Safina’s comments: “It’s not the serve, it’s just my brain. I know exactly what I have to do, but if I’m not using my brain, I’m not doing the things my coach is telling me. I’m too disappointed with myself.”

  1. Is it me or are the top seeds on this hard court season are erratic?

I’m really surprise that Dinara lost this early she has done really well on hard courts. Last year she had a great run winning this tournament. She reached the final last week at Cincy. Earlier this year she did well on hard courts reaching AO final.

Azarenka has not fared well on this hard court season. I was expecting better results from her.

I’m not surprised about Wozniacki’s latest results. She wanted to crack the top ten so bad that she used JJ’s method. Now she is crashing and burning.

  2. So far this tournament has been so weird…some favourites have been sent packing!!!…but the others players have shown us a great level…

  3. Carlos, I agree with what you have said about Wozniacki and Safina but not about Azarenka. I think that Azarenka has just been unfortunate in the players she has been drawn against during this North American hardcourt season. In LA she got Sharapova in the second round who has been solid since her comeback and last week in Cincy she got Jankovic, who, as we know is playing really well again. So although she hasn’t been winning too many matches lately I really don’t think its her fault that she has come up against better players. As I write this she is a break down to Clijsters in the third set which I don’t find surprising given the way Clijsters has been playing.

  4. I support your theory Bróna.. azarenka has being given with reallly touhg players in early rounds, and i think her game can’t totally make the “clic” she needs..
about safina i’ve been saying it’s hard times for her and today she was desastrous with serve (maria was too), she was not even the shadow of her game this early season..
top players not playing at a top level at all!!!

  5. Azarenka lost to Clijsters in three sets. Ms. Bróna I agree with you to a certain point. You re right they were tough opponents and tough draws for Azarenka no question about it. However the way she had been playing I was expecting more of her meaning that she should had won this matches. If you look at the Divapova match in L.A. she got blown in the last set and this tournament also got blown in the last set by Clijsters. Seems she runs out of gas. This tells me that she needs more physical conditioning.

  6. I do agree with you that it seems she needs to work on her conditioning. She could be feeling the effects of the first half of the season when she played a lot of matches aswell. Love the nickname Divapova btw!

  7. Safina has a lot of excuses, and I hope she doesnt reach the final because she ruined two finals this year with her poor play and sour pus attitude.
