Dinara Safina is constantly attacked for being a world number one without winning a Grand Slam (the most brutal attacker is Serena Williams, in my opinion) and her brother Marat, the winner of two Grand Slam titles, is defending his hard-working younger sister.
Here are just some excerpts from Marat’s recent interview:
She spends so much time on court. I think she is more professional than all the players together.
Nobody believed that she going to be top 10 even two, three years ago. So look where she is right now.
So it’s a little bit ?? it gets tough on her. But she’s there. She’s fighting. She’s trying. I’m really proud of her that she can stand, and I tell everybody to **** off basically in every press conference. I would do this way, but unfortunately she’s very polite to you guys.

Q. Now that you stopped, what about coaching her?
MARAT SAFIN: Oh, you want me to hang myself? (laughter.)
Safina reached the top of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour rankings April 20, when she and Marat became the only brother-sister duo to have been No.1 in professional tennis.

I like Dinara. She has worked hard to get where she is now. She concentrates on her game (unlike others who spend time in televison doing cameos, modeling, and all other activities apart from practising), she is also in active in the WTA tour the year round (unlike the William sisters who participate and perform only in the big 5. Well looks like she is getting annoyed with her detractors as well from her comment I’m number one, like it or not!
Sorry Marija I know you love JJ, but her comments on Dinara’s ranking are in bad taste considering her performances while she was No 1 and in the past one year!
oh well… even if you stay 24/7 on the court and you couldn’t win GS, can you blame them from questioning your position of being the ” No.1″ Tennis player??? How can Roger F. be recognized as the “Greatest” if he didn’t win “14 GS” ? It means it is so important to win GS, and that is every player’s dream…. right marija?
by the way, look at ana ivanovic. when she got the “No.1 rank” position, did people attack her for being the No.1??? ofcourse not… ’cause she already got the French open, by winning it she already proved that she got the right to be on top….

Anna, I also hate JJ’s comments about Dinara’s ranking. I even wrote that on my blog. Having been a slamless No.1 herself, JJ should be the last person to criticize Dinara.
Juzme, that’s true about Roger, he wouldn’t have been considered the greatest if he hadn’t won so many slams, but also, Safina has deserved her ranking, that’s without a doubt in my opinion. And after all, it’s not her who invented the ranking system.

I think she should let Marat help out with her pressers. I think she shouldn’t be shy and throw Serena’s weak performance throughout the year except for big events to her face and ask why can’t she work hard as everyone else during the season instead of bragging about how many slams she’d got.
Wow Marat, she’s your sister and you have to step up for her, but even you have to see that something is not right. Forget that Dinara hasn’t won a slam, but look at how she loses it under pressure. She’s not got it going on in the head and she is constantly blaming her poor coach!

that’s hilarious, so let me get this straight. she works harder than the williams but yet she doesnt win the big ones while they mess around by your estimation but yet win the important tournaments. so doesnt that mean they are actually better than safina since they dont have to work as hard to win the more important matches? face the facts the williams are better than she is and the pressure of the ranking has actually been detrimental to her mental state so she is also competitively weak minded. meanwhile the williams are just talking smack, knowing it will get in her head. if she loses another grand slam to one of them she will never get her edge back.
