Stacey AllasterNew WTA Tour chairwoman and CEO Stacey Allaster touched the hot topic of women's world rankings right after being appointed on Monday.

"It's a 52-week ruling average and it's a combination of the Grand Slams and Tour events. Without question, based on the ranking system, with consistent performance at the Slams and at the Tours, Dinara Safina is the number one player," Allaster said.

"Every fan has their own (ranking) measure, what we know is that we have a system… (Safina) has had a great season and she will win a Grand Slam I have no doubt in my mind."

Therefore, those of you who find the rankings flawed, together with world No.2 Serena Williams, will not be satisfied soon.

Monica Seles inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame

Monica SelesFormer world number one Monica Seles, 35, was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame on Saturday.

Seles’ career was marked by the stabbing in 1993, but as much as we associate Seles with that incident we always think of her more than impressive tennis career, and unfortunately of how much more successful it could have been had it not been for the incident in Hamburg.

The Yugoslavian-born American who officially retired from tennis last year, won nine Grand Slam singles titles, including four Australian and three French Opens. She is still the youngest French Open champion – when she won the trophy in 1990 she was only 16 years and six months old. Her final Grand Slam title came in 1996 at the Australian Open.

Seles won 53 singles titles and six doubles titles and spent a total of 178 weeks on top of the rankings. She finished 1991 and 1992 as world No.1. (source: Reuters, photo courtesy of Life)

Sania Mirza

Indian tennis star Sania Mirza, ranked 85th in the world, is to get engaged to family friend Sohrab Mirza on Friday, and two men could not handle that.

On Wednesday, Mohammad Ashraf was arrested after threatening to kill himself if Mirza did not marry him. On Thursday, Ajay Singh Yadav told the police that he had been in love with Mirza for five years and also wanted to marry her.

Mohammed Ashraf, an engineering student, tried to enter Mirza's house in Hyderabad and threatened to commit suicide if her engagement was not cancelled. Ashraf fell in love with Mirza two years ago, watching her play in Bangalore.

Another student, Ajay Singh Yadav arrived in Hyderabad in the morning and rushed towards Mirza's house, saying he wanted to meet her. When he did not go away despite warnings, the police took him in to custody.

BTW: I thought Mirza has already been engaged. Apparently she was just planning to get engaged. (source: BBC, photo: Ralf Reinecke)
