Marion Bartoli in doubt for Wimbledon after limping out of Eastbourne

Marion Bartoli in doubt for Wimbledon after limping out of EastbourneMarion Bartoli could miss Wimbledon as she had to withdraw from her semifinal against fellow Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano at the AEGON International.

"If it is a strain then there is not much chance I can play next week," said the 2007 Wimbledon finalist Bartoli, who has been seeded 12th for this year’s Wimbledon.

"The doctors can't yet say what the diagnosis is because it is too soon. I need to wait until tomorrow and see," added the world No.12 Bartoli.

Bartoli had lost the first set 6-4, before asking for the trainer to be summoned and having her thigh treated and strapped out. However, she withdrew after losing the first game of the second set.

Bartoli refused to shake hands with Razzano before leaving the Centre Court, and later left the press conference in tears.

Holder Agnieszka Radwanska upset in Eastbourne quarterfinals

Agnieszka RadwanskaDefending champion and eighth seed Agnieszka Radwanska fell to Virginie Razzano 7-6(5) 7-5 in the quarterfinals of the AEGON International.

Razzano had upset top seed Elena Dementieva in the second round, and in the match against Radwanska she was never behind in either set.

The world No.25 Razzano will face Marion Bartoli in the semifinals. Bartoli has reached her third straight semifinal in Eastbourne, beating Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-1 6-4.

The other semifinal will feature sixth seed Caroline Wozniacki, the only seed left in the women’s draw, and Aleksandra Wozniak. Both players had straightforward wins in the quarters.

Wozniacki has had no trouble with Wozniak so far, having lost only five games in two matches they played, but Wozniak has had one of her greatest weeks in Eastbourne, including her career-best win over world No.5 and champion at recent Roland Garros Svetlana Kuznetsova in the second round. The world No.4 Dementieva was bageled after 21 minutes. In the second set she recovered her aggression, but missed her chances in the third-set tiebreak.

With No.7 seed Nadia Petrova also losing on Wednesday, more precisely retiring because of problems with her back, only two seeded players have reached the Eastbourne quarterfinals: eighth-seeded holder Agnieszka Radwanska and sixth seed Caroline Wozniacki. Adidas by Stella McCartney signs Caroline Wozniacki, no more Maria Kirilenko

Caroline WozniackiMaria Kirilenko

Stella McCartney’s patience deserves every respect, but even her waiting for Maria Kirilenko to actually showcase some of her outfits seems to have ended since Caroline Wozniacki has been chosen as a new promoter of adidas by Stella McCartney.

Maria Kirilenko has been constantly losing early in tournaments and tennis fans barely got the chance to see beautiful adidas by Stella McCartney designs. I’m sure the 18-year-old Dane will be a much better promoter of the brand, although Kirilenko and adidas by Stella McCartney were a match made in heaven considering how the clothes suited the Russian.

Anna Chakvetadze scores a Top 10 win, Jelena Jankovic victim

Jelena JankovicAnna Chakvetadze hadn’t scored a Top 10 win since February 2008, but she improved by beating world No.6 and third seed Jelena Jankovic, who followed fellow falling Serbian star Ana Ivanovic out of the AEGON International. Final score: 6-7(5) 6-3 6-2. Thankfully, unlike Ana, for Jelena we can at least say she was upset!

Not only is Jankovic still in the mud, and she lost in the first round of a tournament, but she lost to Anna Chakvetadze, who herself said "I am pleased with every win right now because it's very important to me to get back my confidence."

Jankovic has started losing in the very beginnings of tournaments, and plus, to insecure players. Chakvetadze had last defeated a Top 10 opponent when she beat Marion Bartoli at the Paris Indoor event.

Jankovic’s excuse for the defeat was the change of surface: "It was obviously my first match on grass." However, the 24-year-old also mentioned her worrying lack of motivation: "I'll play Wimbledon and then we'll see. At least I can take a few weeks off then. I wish I could take a break now. I need to get to where I want to play tennis again."

It could make Jankovic any better that second seed Svetlana Kuznetsova lost to Aleksandra Wozniak in straight sets 6-0 6-3, just days after lifting the French Open trophy, while fourth seed Vera Zvonareva fell to Amelie Mauresmo 6-3 1-6 6-3, in the opening round as well. Ana Ivanovic loses to Nadia Petrova in the first round of Eastbourne

Ana IvanovicAna Ivanovic’s career is still in free fall. The latest disappointment is that her Wimbledon preparations have been cut short as she lost to Nadia Petrova in the first round of the AEGON International in Eastourne.

We can’t call it an upset though, as Petrova is seeded seventh, while Ivanovic, who had fallen out of the Top 10 for the first time in about two years after Roland Garros, wasn't even seeded at the grass-court tournament. At least she put up a fight, and lost in three sets 6-1 4-6 6-4.

Ivanovic is not out of Eastbourne completely, although she will probably be very soon. The Serb is competing in doubles, partnered with Germany's Sabine Lisicki. They will play their first-round match against none other than top seeds Cara Black and Liezel Huber.

Lisicki was also defeated in singles today, losing 6-2 6-1 to Australian Samantha Stosur.

Top seed Elena Dementieva cruised past fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko 6-2 6-2. Dementieva will next play Virginie Razzano, who comfortably beat fellow Frenchwoman Alize Cornet 7-6(3) 6-2. (photo: Stephane Martinache)

Magdalena Rybarikova beats Li Na for AEGON Classic title

Magdalena Rybarikova wins AEGON Classic title

Slovakia's Magdalena Rybarikova claimed her first WTA Tour singles title after beating Li Na in Sunday’s final at the AEGON Classic.

The 13th-seeded Rybarikova bageled Li in the first set and won the second set in a tiebreaker to close out a 6-0 7-6(2) victory. The 20-year-old Rybarikova wasn’t broken once in her first WTA singles final and beat the fourth-seeded Li in just 73 minutes.

The Chinese world No.20, who knocked out Maria Sharapova in the semifinals, was hoping for her third WTA title.

Winning the AEGON Classic title, the 58th-ranked Rybarikova took home $37,000.

The former Wimbledon champion, who had been looking for her third title in Birmingham, suffered six breaks of serve while Li was avenging her Roland Garros defeat.

The world No.20 Li will play Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia, who defeated Sania Mirza of India 3-6 6-0 6-3 in the other semifinal.
