Ana IvanovicAna Ivanovic’s career is still in free fall. The latest disappointment is that her Wimbledon preparations have been cut short as she lost to Nadia Petrova in the first round of the AEGON International in Eastourne.

We can’t call it an upset though, as Petrova is seeded seventh, while Ivanovic, who had fallen out of the Top 10 for the first time in about two years after Roland Garros, wasn’t even seeded at the grass-court tournament. At least she put up a fight, and lost in three sets 6-1 4-6 6-4.

Ivanovic is not out of Eastbourne completely, although she will probably be very soon. The Serb is competing in doubles, partnered with Germany’s Sabine Lisicki. They will play their first-round match against none other than top seeds Cara Black and Liezel Huber.

Lisicki was also defeated in singles today, losing 6-2 6-1 to Australian Samantha Stosur.

Top seed Elena Dementieva cruised past fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko 6-2 6-2. Dementieva will next play Virginie Razzano, who comfortably beat fellow Frenchwoman Alize Cornet 7-6(3) 6-2. (photo: Stephane Martinache)

  1. Free fall is putting it mildly! What the hell is wrong with this girl! Number one, she a mental midget!! Last two matches against top 10, losing 5 straight games! Can anyone explain this? I guess we saw it coming after the shock of her firing Kardon unexpectantly. Her whole game, team, situation is a mess, and it looks like there’s no end in site. Gosh, I wish she lost 6-0 6-1 .

  2. Ana has not defeated a top ten opponent this year, in fact she has not beaten anyone in the top 20. The sad thing is that it might get uglier.

Cornet has not done well in 09 so far, she’s out the top 20. Alize has not made it out of the second round 7 out of the last 8 tournaments, losing 4 times in the first round in that stretch.

Kirilenko (the self proclaimed princess) is still M.I.A. for about a year along with her game. Here’s an advise: Become a doubles specialist.

  3. I did not take into account Fed Cup results because Ana did not get any WTA ranking points nor WTA championship points for that victory. 😛

  4. It’s not just Ana, Kirilenko and Cornet who are constantly losing, it seems that the whole tour is still in chaos. Kuznetsova only winning three games against Wozniak, Jankovic falling to Chakvetadze and Zvonareva losing to Mauresmo. At least in Zvonareva’s case she was playing a former Wimbledon champion and world no.1 and she is coming off an injury. Vaidisova, Szavay and Hantuchova also have definitely not been at their best for some time now. Cibulkova also lost in three sets today. I wonder if Dementieva and Safina will follow suit or if they will be successful over the next three weeks. I am interested to see how the younger players like A Radwanska, Azarenka and Wozniacki adjust to playing on the grass.

  5. Is she really ready for wimbledon next week?

I’m the big fan of maria sharapova, but ana is a good player too. Wimbledon last year very bored without maria or ana in quarter final. Serena and Venus of course great player in this world but, I’m very bored to watch them since 1998.

I hope this wimbledon no more serena or venus.

  6. Well we know she’s at least preparing for Wimbledon. Always preparing for something, but never really accomplishing anything…I’m so mad at her …and her team! She’s quickly becoming irrelevent in tennis circles. Oh wait, just though of one thing she’s always ready for…..a photo shoot!!!!
