Maria SharapovaSince her comeback, Maria Sharapova has remained undefeated on her favorite surface and reached the semifinals of the grasscourt Birmingham event.

Sharapova won her fourth match on grass this season by defeating last year’s Birmingham runner-up Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium. The Russian, making her way back after nine months out with a shoulder injury, won 6-1 2-6 6-3.

  1. Maria lost, but she made it to the semifinals at least. I saw that coming though since grass is Li Na’s preffered surface and she is in revenge form.

Good luck to Maria at Wimbledon. ;(

  2. I agree Marija. But it was very painful in the second set, she could have made it 5-5 since Maria was leading 40-00 while trailing 4-5, the match could have went into a third set.

She served pretty well today too, only two double faults and had 91% first serve percentage in the first set. I prefer her winning with tons of double faults though. ;P

I can’t wait to see Maria play again, why can’t Wimbledon come soooooooooner.

  3. Since she’s earning 130 points, she’ll probably be in the top 60 by now? And maybe being in the top 40 for the Race to the Sony Ericsson Championships. It would be pretty awesome if she ends up in the top 8 at gets a chance to play at the YEC.

She only needs to reach farther rounds at the two Grand Slams and win a title. If my calculations are correct, she still has a chance (since a lot of players in the top 8 are having only 2000 something points), but then again those players will be winning as well so their points will be earning the same time.

Hopefully due to Maria’s low ranking, she won’t be drawn against a top player in the first round. I would so upset if she was drawn against Venus. 😛

The lower-ranked players are randomly put right? But as a past-champion I hope they would at least give Maria an advantage or even a seeding, like they usually do.

  4. Teerin, don’t get me into mathematics please, it has practically evaporated since my high school. 😛 Her ranking depends on the performance of a lot of other players.

Maria could face a tough player in the first round, even though she’s now ranked low. Clashes of two highly-ranked players are avoided, and hence the specific rules of creating a draw and placing the seeds (you can read them in the WTA Rulebook, page 66, or so). Maria can’t be seeded, seedings are determined by the rankings.

  5. Thank you for your reply. 😛

Yes, I know Maria will not be seeded therefore her encounter with a top ten player in the first round is highly possible.
