Wearing a new colorful EleVen dress, Venus Williams made her way into the second round of Roland Garros. The seven-time Grand Slam champion beat fellow American Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-1 4-6 6-2. Maria Sharapova also progressed in three sets, defeating world No.64 Anastasiya Yakimova of Belarus 3-6 6-1 6-2.

Williams has never won the French Open, and was upset in the third round in three of the last four years, but she was a runner-up to her sister Serena in 2002. In addition, she holds a 36-12 record at Roland Garros, which makes her the player with most wins in the women's draw at the tournament.

Sharapova, now ranked only 102nd, lost the first set, but stormed through the next two to reach the second round of Roland Garros and book a meeting with seed No.11 Nadia Petrova, who will be Sharapova's toughest opponent since her recent comeback to competitive tennis. The third-seeded Williams will face Lucie Safarova in the second round.

Upsets: So far on Day 2, seed No.14 Flavia Pennetta and seed No.23 Alisa Kleybanova lost in the first round. Pennetta was upset by American world No.116 Alexa Glatch 6-1 6-1. Did anyone see what happened to Pennetta to have won only two games? Kleybanova lost to Slovenia's Polona Hercog, ranked 167th, 6-2 4-6 6-1. (source: AP, photos via Roland Garros, Yahoo)

Omg Maria's dress rocks!!! She's incredibly beautiful of course, but the dress is something special! Somebody in Nike gets a huge inspiration from her to make such a stuning outfit. I mean, all her outfits are beautiful, but this is…no comment – perfection. Btw well done Maria, I hope you'll make a big progress here, at least I could watch the dress longer(: kisses from Macedonia

Oh, and seed No.17 Patty Schnyder went out too, to Kateryna Bondarenko, in straight sets, as well as, guess who, No.26 Anna Chakvetadze.

    oh hi marija!!!

    guess what?? im back again…

and i have a revelation, i think i like jj's dress now…just seen her play against cetkovska??…and i think she plays well now, she seems to freely move now…

the dress seems fine….but not exactly loving it, not ranked as equal to the stunning can ary yellow of venus in australia…

my top fashion dresses in paris (for now):
    1. maria, flowing layered dress
    2. caroline, love the simple blue and white sporty ensemble
    3. jj, she deserves to be in this spot
    4. venus, well, the print looks good, but the straps??? ugghh, i hate the straps!

Maria's dress is by the far the best dress/outfit I've seen so far at Roland Garros.

Ba Ba Belly, if you think Maria's dress is disgusting. I'm super super curious whose outfit do you think looks best? Or unless you don't watch tennis at all and is simply another Maria hater.

Phaura, now that I've seen JJ's dress in action, I can say it's definitely the best one from ANTA so far. At least it has some character. For Venus, I think she should always go with bright colors, and refreshing outfits.

Teerin, I've deleted Ba Ba Belly's comment, as rude comments of anonymous people are not welcome here.

hi marija…serena's dress is just plain two tone dress….

orange and black,,, there is a black rubber? near her knee,,, seems like there is still a problem with that injury….

this is the same dress she wore for ea grand slam tennis shoot…

so the verdict, maria and jelena are battling who wears the best roland garros outfit….i think im liking jj's intuitive design,,,maria for class…im giving jj the praises for her dress now!!!

marija, the color of the tournament is pink, rafa, sveta and zakopalova…

im hearing a major upset here!!!

I like Serena's outfit a lot. Design is simple and sporty, while the color suits both her skin and clay beautifully. Don't know why, but I like reddish colors for clay, more than contrasts.

    Zakopalova won the second-set tiebreak!

    Thank you, Marija.

Also, I'm watching Serena's match and I'm loving it. I didn't want Serena to win yet since I want to see the match longer. I knew it was going to be a tough match for Serena since Zakopalova upset her at Marbella.

Serena looks like she's back in the final set though.

The match ended with Serena winning the final set. Zakopalova was a great fighter and didn't give it to Serena easily. I mean, when Serena served and it looked like it will be an ace or impossible to return, she returns it and hits a winner afterwards. And she's definitely not nervous at all. She saved tons of match points today and credits to her for that. She didn't play like a 100-rank today, she knew she could give Serena a hard time.

It was a great match, very fun to watch.

yeah. i take that back, venus looks super fab but maria, its okay, i just dont like the top, with like, the light blue, it looks like a bra.

Its a sad day when people care more about what the people playing the sports are wearing rather than the actual sport itself. Next thing you know football players will be playing in fancy playboy speedos with the neck ties and all.
