Seed No.11 Victoria Azarenka upset world No.1 and top seed Serena Williams 6-3 6-1 to claim the biggest title in her career.

The 19-year-old Belorussian denied the American a record sixth Sony Ericsson Open title and at the same time became only the sixth teenage champion in tournament history, joining Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, Steffi Graf, Venus Williams and Gabriela Sabatini.

Williams gave Azarenka credit for winning the final, even though Williams’ left thigh was heavily strapped and she was struggling with her movement. I agree that Azarenka’s capability shouldn’t be denied, especially when we have in mind their last meeting, when Azarenka had to retire because of very evident illness, despite taking the first set.

The Belorussian won her first WTA singles title three months ago in Brisbane, and has now already added the third one to her resume.

Currently at the career high ranking of No.10, Azarenka will rise even more, to a career best No.8. Williams will remain No.1.

Winning the Sony Ericsson Open Azarenka earned $700,000 and Williams received $350,000.

  1. clearly Serena is injured but congrats Azarenka she will be the next pova, she looks like pova, grunts like pova and both won over an injured Serena. They should sent her flowers for giving them the gateway to fame and fortune.

  2. hi marija!

    nice going here!

wow! ive predicted it right, vika will win this match! at the third set of the vee and serena encounter, serena was hobbling and limping between points! it would be a different final…

glad for serena to play and fight in the final…

for vika: i had so much to say!

i think this signals the proper change of guards, handing a rest for the dominant player of her generation to another would-be dominant player of her generation…

serena dominated her generation (well that includes venus, justine)

now, victoria will lead a new pack of players to dominate 2010-2020, she and caroline, agnieszka, will lead a new crop of champions!

though this may be blunt, but the decline of the Serbian Champions may as well honor this argument, but nonetheless Ana and Jelena will dominate along these great players (Vika, Carol and Agnieszka) if they step up this game! i have a great great respect for them!

victoria’s strengths are her forehand, and the ability to direct the balls effeciently and effectively, though she is not a full-fledged power player, her balls found length and always lands closer to the lines!!!!!!!!

  3. hi pat, it’s been a long time.

victoria will definitely have many more victories in her career. it’s nice to see promising young players succeed, but it would also be nice to see jelena and ana back at their best, especially jelena.
