Venus Williams advances at Australian Open
Sixth seed Venus Williams joined her younger sister Serena in the second round of the Australian Open, beating Germany's world No.100 Angelique Kerber 6-3 6-3.
Williams raced to a 5-0 lead, but Kerber won the next three games and saved a set point. Still, Williams held her serve and won the first set. In the second set, Kerber had two opportunities on serve to take a 4-1 lead, but Williams won all the games to win the match.
Venus Williams is still seeking her first Australian Open title, despite being a five-time Wimbledon and two-time US Open champion.
More notable first-round results we haven't already mentioned:
Home favorite Samantha Stosur won two tiebreaks to defeat Klara Zakopalova, eighth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova advanced with a 6-2 3-6 6-3 victory over Anastasia Rodionova, Amelie Mauresmo advanced in straight sets, beating Olga Govortsova, while Nicole Vaidisova, unfortunately not surprisingly, lost in the opening round to Severine Bremond, 6-2 6-1. Three-time Australian Open champion Serena Williams reached the second round of the first Grand Slam of the year with a 6-3 6-2 victory over world No.123 Meng Yuan of China.
One of the biggest favorites for the Australian Open crown, fourth seed Elena Dementieva, didn’t advance into the second round of the tournament unchallenged. The Russian’s first-round opponent was world No.88 Kristina Barrois of Germany.
I was interested in the outcomes of the first-round matches home favorites Jelena Dokic and Casey Dellacqua were playing on day one of the 2009 Australian Open.
I’m really happy for Dokic, I would like this Wimbledon semifinalist and former world number four to revive her shattered career. She has just made an excellent step forward.

Fifth seed Ana Ivanovic wasn’t in promising form during her first-round match at the 2009 Australian Open, but eventually she managed to get past Germany’s Julia Goerges 7-5 6-3.

Is this really possible? Serena Williams is cutting back her spending on designer handbags and jewelry, the tennis star who has earned almost $22 million in career prize money and reportedly makes close to $10 million a year in endorsements.
