Seed No.16 Marion Bartoli crushed top seed and world No.1 Jelena Jankovic 6-1 6-4 in the fourth round of the Australian Open.

Bartoli’s performance was impressive. She was moving well and ruthlessly used every Jankovic’s second serve. Jankovic, on the other hand, was only occasionally coming into the match, and seemed blocked throughout.

Bartoli won the first set so fast that I thought I was dreaming. Before you knew it she was leading 5-0. Jankovic gave more resistance in the second set, coming back from a break down two times, but at 4-4 Bartoli broke once again and in the following game she earned three successive match points.

Bartoli was dominating the whole match, while Jankovic was constantly saving herself from embarrassment. I don’t know what happened to Jankovic, but the best she could do was to at least win a few games. Jankovic’s proving to everyone that she can win a Grand Slam ended with a straightforward loss. Too bad.

Bartoli, who was a Brisbane finalist this year, will face either Nadia Petrova or Vera Zvonareva in the Australian Open quarterfinals.

  1. So sad JJ lost. Maybe because of the hot weather and that stupid shoes, I thought it will be a night match this time. I watched the first set only and Bartoli played really well! I hope she beat Vera or Nadia!

  2. I was lucky enough to see this match live on tv…and my oh my, never seen bartoli played and hit the balls that good before today. Absolutely amazing, her shots were incredible! She moved very well today. Meanwhile jankovic seemed to lost her concentration and didn’t hit balls well. All credit to bartoli tough! Well done!

  3. I didn’t notice she was troubled by the shoes this time, I think the problem was in her head, something was happening there.

But of course, all credit to Bartoli. If Jankovic had been herself, all we can claim is that the result would have been much closer, but we can’t claim Jankovic would certainly win, no way.

  4. It’s sad to loose in that way but I think She can’t handle the pressure. This was by far her best oportunity to win a Grand Slam. Poor JJ =(

  5. I am very, very sad now, but I really love Jelena Jankovic. I know that she is a very smart player and that she will back.

  6. She has definitely gone through worse times, but the pressure took part, I think so too. And I read that she said that it would take months to overcome that loss. I wish her fast recovery.

  7. I think JJ has to forget this match! She has to think in her future! Maybe and if she is focus on her game she can come back to the number one and also win a grand slam in this season.

  8. I hope she will be able to do so, but it will certainly be hard. Her serve was a disaster, her movement was also below par, and overall it looked as if she hadn’t been present in the match.

  9. I believe Jelena has spunk, otherwise she wouldn’t have reached the top so shortly after wanting to quit tennis in desperation.
