As you can see, the Reebok-clad Mauresmo didn’t sport many different designs during 2008. All her outfits were simple, and often she wore the same dress, just in different color.

Jelena Jankovic matches a shirt with her red Porsche to wish us a happy new year

Jelena Jankovic posing next to her Porsche

Jelena Jankovic wishes her fans a happy and successful 2009 standing next to her shiny red Porsche Carrera 911. Jelena wouldn’t be Jelena if she hadn’t had a matching shirt. Of course, a Santa Clause hat is there too.

What is she trying to tell us? Like "I wish you a 2009 just like my 2008 was, look what I’ve got!" Hehe. Or, knowing Jelena, I believe she couldn't wait to be photographed with the Santa Clause hat on, then she realized it matched perfectly with her nice car, and then she thought it would be cool to match a shirt too.

Happy 2009, JJ! I wish you a Grand Slam success!

Maria Sharapova practicing again, but withdraws from Hong Kong

Maria SharapovaMaria Sharapova was supposed to finally make her comeback from shoulder injury at the JB Group Classic in Hong Kong, but the Russian hasn’t had sufficient training to compete at the high level this event demands. However, the Australian Open champion is hitting tennis balls again, and the injury should be a thing of the past.

I miss competing so much. I am trying to do everything possible to be ready for Australia, but I have promised my doctors, coach and family that I will not rush back. Since I only started practicing 16 days ago,  I have only been able to practice so many hours at a time which is why I don't feel like I am ready to compete at a high level right now and this is why I need to pull out of the exhibition in Hong Kong.

In her latest doodle, Sharapova explains in detail how she was healing her injury. In short, she was working on her strength and on building up all the muscles around her shoulder with shoulder rehab specialist in Arizona for 10 weeks. However, the pain didn't go away. Then she resorted to plan B, which was a minor arthroscopic surgery that lasted 22 minutes. The procedure was successful, and after 14 days she had full range of motion.

I know my shoulder will be 100 percent by Australia, I just need to see if I have enough tennis training to be ready for that level.

Why is Jelena Jankovic defending herself this much?

Jelena JankovicJelena Jankovic is apparently too insecure because of not winning a single Grand Slam title, as she constantly feels the need to defend herself in terms of her No.1 ranking.

I feel like Yes in fact I’m the best player in the world. To be number one is no small accomplishment. It’s something people dream of achieving. And it’s not just being number one in the middle of the year, and then slowing down. This is huge. At this point, I’d rather finish the year at No. 1 rather than have a Slam. You can have a lucky two weeks, a draw opened up, you receive that check and glory and then maybe not win another title ever again. Being on top of the rankings takes a far greater commitment.

Yes, I agree, it is huge to achieve a season-ending top ranking, and I think Jelena deserves to be number one, but why diminish somebody else’s also huge success and constantly emphasize your own.

Jankovic was over-criticized for being a No.1 player without ever winning a Grand Slam, but she shouldn’t fight those accusations by saying that Grand Slam titles are not that big a deal. She should prove herself with hard work and good results that will come, and I can congratulate her for doing exactly that, but she should also avoid this kind of statements so that she could gain utmost respect. Maria Sharapova declared as the biggest hit on Yahoo in 2008

Maria Sharapova at Internazionali BNL dMaria Sharapova is officially the most searched athlete on Yahoo in 2008, and the only tennis player that made the list.

Not that it is surprising, but it is interesting since Sharapova has not played a tennis match since the Rogers Cup in late July. The Russian was not passive in other areas of life though, she has been working on her modeling career very determinedly.

This year was highlighted by the Olympics, but interestingly, the first three spots were occupied by non-Olympians. Not even Michael Phelps could make it onto the medal stand, despite accomplishing the greatest individual feat in Olympic Games history.

Have a look at Yahoo's Top 10 list of most searched athletes in 2008:

1. Maria Sharapova
2. Gina Carano
3. Danica Patrick
4. Cristiano Ronaldo
5. Amanda Beard
6. Michael Phelps
7. Kimbo Slice
8. Leryn Franco
9. Natalie Gulbis
10. David Beckham

Jelena Jankovic has never trained this hard, can’t wait to face tough players

Jelena JankovicI can’t wait for the 2009 season to start and I’m especially eager to see how Jelena Jankovic will perform, because she took her number one ranking very seriously and is determined to stay on top as well as to win her maiden Grand Slam title. The following Jankovic’s statements make me anticipate the new season even more.

"My priorities will be on the big tournaments, Grand Slams and Tier 1s. When you prepare 100 percent, when you put all the hard work in, then you can really have higher expectations and you can expect yourself to achieve great things."

"I’m really training hard," added the 23-year-old Serb, who started training in November and is currently practicing in Florida. "Before I came here I was in Mexico in high altitude … trying to get stronger and fitter."

Moreover, Jankovic can’t wait to face tough competition: "I want the girls to play their best tennis against me and I want to win in those circumstances. I’m up for the challenge. I want to compete in those best tournaments with the best players out there."

"I love being in that role, being in the role of the No. 1 player in the world. I like that position and I want to stay there as long as it is possible," Jankovic said. "I haven’t trained in my whole career as hard as I’m training now, and I hope and I believe that all this hard work will pay off."

In addition to all the hard work, Jankovic has finally decided to ease her schedule. She will play less in 2009 in order to stay healthy.

I can’t wait to see the outcome of her preparations. All the best, JJ! (interview: Tennis.com, photo: Ralf Reinecke)

Could Ana Ivanovic be 'too nice' to rule women’s tennis? You’d have to be kidding"

Australian Tennis Magazine, on the other hand, feels Ana partly belongs to Australia calling her "Aussie" Ana and adding: "Ana Ivanovic may be Serbia’s pride but with a special affinity for our local culture and events, she’s also Australia’s joy."
