The biggest shock of Wimbledon 2008 has just taken place: former champion Maria Sharapova of Russia was defeated in the second round by 154th-ranked compatriot Alla Kudryavtseva. And not only that, but the upset happened in straight sets, even without tie-breaks. Final score: 6-2 6-4.

The 20-year-old Kudryavtseva, who has never won a WTA Tour title and was playing only her 10th Grand Slam match, broke Sharapova in the sixth and eighth games of the first set to win it. In the second set, Sharapova broke Kudryavtseva at the very beginning, but her lead didn’t last for long as Kudryavtseva leveled to 2-all. Later in the match, there was another exchange of breaks. Then, Kudryavtseva took the serve of the 2004 Wimbledon champion once again and sealed the biggest victory of her career.

World No.2 Sharapova has today suffered the earliest exit from a Grand Slam event since her first full season on the circuit in 2003. Too bad, another great Masha’s Grand Slam outfit didn’t last long (remember the 2007 US Open?).

  1. Yeah it is a shock ,but guys it’s sport everything can happen..it was just not her day..she has so many things ahead Her so this tennis match is not the end of the world..like a fan still with Maria–>in my eyes simply champion…

  2. I really admire how she handle such tough situation. After her loss she took it positively. I know this is pretty shocking, this is her earliest loss ever after her Wimbledon debut in 2003 and lost in the 4th round (mess up record, huh… i’m deeply sad). Anyways, I read her post-match interview, and she said this loss will definitely motivate her to come back for more.

Maria you will always be a great champion. There’s definitely more years yet to come. You’re still young and i believe you’ll keep on improving and winning. Bounce back and amaze everyone again!

  3. There have been quite shocking moments this early days of this year’s Wimbledon. Anyway, anyone who can you figure out some similarities between Novak and Maria? Well, it’s not just because they both like to spend some time chatting together before a tournament but because they’re ~ both Australian ’08 champs… both seeded 3 in the tournament… both lost in the second round… both lost in straight sets… and both of them were beaten by Russians. Intertwined fate, huh, whatchu guys think?
