Svetlana Kuznetsova stunned by Agnieszka Radwanska in Wimbledon fourth round

Svetlana Kuznetsova at Wimbledon 2008Fourth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova followed Maria Sharapova, Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic out of Wimbledon. For the first time in history none of the top four women's seeds have reached the quarterfinals at the All England Club.

Kuznetsova was defeated in the fourth round by world No.11 Agnieszka Radwanska. The 19-year-old Pole, who won the Eastbourne title before arriving at Wimbledon, broke the Russian at 5-3 and 5-5 in the decider before serving out for a 6-4 1-6 7-5 triumph.

In the quarterfinals Radwanska will play sixth seed Serena Williams.

Other quarterfinal pairs are Zheng Jie (the first ever women's wildcard to reach the Wimbledon last eight) vs. Nicole Vaidisova, Elena Dementieva (the highest seed left) vs. Nadia Petrova, defending champion Venus Williams vs. Tamarine Tanasugarn. (source: BBC, photo: Getty Images)

Jelena Jankovic falls to Tamarine Tanasugarn in the fourth round of Wimbledon

Jelena Jankovic falls to Tamarine Tanasugarn in the fourth round of WimbledonSecond seed Jelena Jankovic didn’t resist the curse of favorites for long as she was beaten at Wimbledon, just like top and third seed Ana Ivanovic and Maria Sharapova. World No.3 Jankovic lost to Thailand’s Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-3 6-2 it the fourth round.

Jankovic’s previous match was also a close affair, but today she couldn’t come back after losing the first set. Jankovic was invariably troubled by a knee injury she sustained in the match against Caroline Wozniacki.

Jankovic has never surpassed the fourth round at Wimbledon. With the victory over the Serb, world No.60 Tanasugarn made her best result at a Grand Slam, reaching the quarterfinals for the first time. At Wimbledon, after six exits in the fourth round, the Thai veteran finally went further.

Jelena Jankovic beats Caroline Wozniacki, reaches fourth round at Wimbledon

Jelena Jankovic beats Caroline Wozniacki, reaches fourth round at WimbledonSecond seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia lost the first set against rising star Caroline Wozniacki, and I’m sure everyone’s first thought was Will this be another Sharapova/Ivanovic moment?, but fighting J.J. didn't let the trend take her over. The world No.3 reached the fourth round at Wimbledon 2008 defeating the Danish 17-year-old 2-6 6-4 6-2.

Jankovic was broken twice as she lost the first set, during which she also sustained a left knee injury. Jankovic then broke the 2006 Wimbledon junior champion Wozniacki right away in the opening game of the second set, and it proved to be the last and decisive break of the set. In the decider, J.J. was two breaks up against the world No.30 Wozniacki, and sealed victory on first match point.

Lindsay Davenport withdraws from Wimbledon, retirement hints

Lindsay DavenportFormer champion Lindsay Davenport withdrew from Wimbledon a few hours before her second round match against Gisela Dulko. The reason was knee injury the American had picked up while practicing at Eastbourne last week.

Davenport hinted that this might have been her last Wimbledon:

"I would be surprised if I was back here playing.

"I'm very short sighted about my future – I'm looking forward to the Olympics and the US Open, then no plans." (source: BBC)

Maria Sharapova beaten by Alla Kudryavtseva in Wimbledon second round

Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon 2008The biggest shock of Wimbledon 2008 has just taken place: former champion Maria Sharapova of Russia was defeated in the second round by 154th-ranked compatriot Alla Kudryavtseva. And not only that, but the upset happened in straight sets, even without tie-breaks. Final score: 6-2 6-4.

The 20-year-old Kudryavtseva, who has never won a WTA Tour title and was playing only her 10th Grand Slam match, broke Sharapova in the sixth and eighth games of the first set to win it. In the second set, Sharapova broke Kudryavtseva at the very beginning, but her lead didn't last for long as Kudryavtseva leveled to 2-all. Later in the match, there was another exchange of breaks. Then, Kudryavtseva took the serve of the 2004 Wimbledon champion once again and sealed the biggest victory of her career.

World No.2 Sharapova has today suffered the earliest exit from a Grand Slam event since her first full season on the circuit in 2003. Too bad, another great Masha's Grand Slam outfit didn’t last long (remember the 2007 US Open?). (via The Independent)
