German Open champion Dinara Safina withdraws from Rome

Dinara SafinaLast week was one of the most memorable times in Dinara Safina's career, as she won the Qatar Telecom German Open beating three Top 10 players on the way. Today, the Russian has withdrawn from the tournament following the one in Berlin.

World No.14 Safina is out of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome and the official reason for her withdrawal is a back injury.

Sybille Bammer has been moved into Safina’s seeded position in the main draw as the nineteenth seed. Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova has also entered the draw as a lucky loser.

Other players that have pulled out of the Italian Open include:

Tatiana Golovin (FRA) – Low back injury
Daniela Hantuchova (SVK) – Foot stress fracture
Justine Henin (BEL) – Fatigue
Li Na (CHN) – Right knee injury
Amelie Mauresmo (FRA) – Right rib muscle strain
Sania Mirza (IND) – Right wrist injury
Shahar Peer (ISR) – Right shoulder tendonitis (via On the Baseline)

    I love Dinara Safina.

    …and I think since the Nadal/Sharapova rants, pull outs are now tagged "the official reason for…" :) like we're in cynical mode. Maybe they're pulling out to PREVENT injury but they have to state an official reason…like Maria wrote.

    Schedule better, (not more mandatory 1000s or whatever) loosen the rules, so that the whole field doesn't have to fall to injury or have to give silly official reasons.

    Haha, yeah, you're absolutely right, Tosin.

    I see many players are frustrated with the schedule, but some of them, like Sharapova, are more willing to defend their position. Other players should follow and support her!
