Venus Williams “has been having some issues”

Today I woke up with the news that Venus Williams will be sidelined for an indefinite period of time. What? How did this come about?

I’ve just been having some issues that I need to resolve, so I’m working on that at the moment and I’m hoping to be back playing as soon as possible,” Williams said Tuesday at the Bausch & Lomb Championships, from which she had withdrawn earlier because of an undisclosed medical problem. “I’m not going to get any further into it, but of course I love the sport.” What does this “but of course I love the sport” mean? It makes her statement sound serious.

Venus Williams last played at the Sony Ericsson Open earlier this month. In her mysterious announcement Venus didn’t rule out any of the upcoming tournaments, but we know she won’t play in the Fed Cup semifinal against Russia on April 26-27.

Also, Venus underlined the French Open as a tournament she doesn’t want to miss: “Of course I want to be there [in France]. I don’t want to be at home watching on TV. Watching this week will be enough on TV, so hopefully not too many more weeks.” (source: ESPN)

  1. Let’s face it–the Williams sisters are always “having some issues” of some type, usually injury issues. When I heard they had both entered Charleston, I would have put money on at least one of them withdrawing. I would have won, too.
