Ivanovic eases past Dushevina at the US Open

Fifth seed Ana Ivanovic of Serbia reached the fourth round of the US Open with a quick 6-1 6-3 victory over Russian Vera Dushevina, ranked 58th in the world. Frankly speaking, the match was everything but thrilling and unpredictable.

As you probably already know a lot about Ivanovic’s tennis results and titles, I won't mention them now, but I will remind you that Dushevina played one final this year. At the Nordic Light Open in Stockholm she lost to Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland.

Ana's next opponent at the US Open will be known in a few hours, and it will be either seed No.12 Venus Williams, or seed No.21 Alona Bondarenko.

Nicole Vaidisova defeats Flavia Pennetta, reaches round three of the US Open

Thirteenth-seeded Czech Nicole Vaidisova beat Italian Flavia Pennetta 6-2 7-6 (7-0) in the round two of the US Open.

I watched only the last part of the match, but I can say that Pennetta had her chances since her opponent was emotionally fragile at moments. What happened was that Vaidisova simply wasn’t able to finish the match when leading 6-5 in the second set. She wasted five match points and let Pennetta make a break. It left the Czech so frustrated and angry that she broke her racket. Pennetta evened the result to 6-6 in the second set, but was demolished in the tie-break by failing to score even one point. That was disappointing. I was hoping for the third set.

After all, the favorite was victorious and she will next play No.18 seed Shahar Peer of Israel. This should be a match worth watching.

Ahsha Rolle scores her second upset of the US Open, advances to the third round

American Ahsha Rolle, ranked 109th in the world, became famous for causing the first major upset at the US Open 2007 by beating No.17 seed Tatiana Golovin in the first round. However, the 22-year-old Rolle hasn’t stopped there. Wednesday night, she advanced to the third round with the victory over 57th-ranked Karin Knapp of Italy 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Since success at Grand Slams is not something Ahsha is accustomed to, she had to stop for a moment to figure out how to celebrate. A simple jump in the air? A fall to the court? Hahaha, not an easy decision. Read more »

Hantuchova upset by Vakulenko in US Open first round

Ninth seed Daniela Hantuchova was upset 6-4 3-6 6-1 by Ukrainian Julia Vakulenko, another shock in the first round of the US Open.

The Slovak made 32 unforced errors as she suffered her earliest exit at Flushing Meadows since she lost on her debut in 2001.

"I felt fine here," Hantuchova said. "I felt very good. Today was just one of those things that is hard to understand." Read more »

Tatiana Golovin out in the first round of the US Open

Seed No.17 Tatiana Golovin was upset in the opening round of the US Open by an American wildcard Ahsha Rolle 6-4 1-6 6-2. Unbelievable! Everyone thought that Golovin would certainly win this match, but instead, the Frenchwoman played one of her worst matches ever and is about to lose a lot of points because she was defending last year's quarterfinals.

Other seeds to fall on the day one were No.29 seed Samantha Stosur of Australia who lost to Alize Cornet of France 6-3 6-2, and No.25 seed Mara Santangelo of Italy who was defeated by Russian Vera Dushevina.

Serena Williams, Jelena Jankovic frustrated by their US Open wardrobe

The first day of the US Open 2007 had Serena Williams and Jelena Jankovic struggle with their wardrobe.

During her 6-3, 7-5 win against German Angelique Kerber, Serena Williams was bothered so much by her outfit that in the second set she ripped off the bow on her Nike dress! The photos prove everything!

Jelena Jankovic won’t play mixed doubles with Jamie Murray at the US Open

Jamie Murray’s mixed doubles success, at least with Jelena Jankovic, won’t carry over to the year’s final Slam at the US Open as Jankovic says she took a pass on Murray’s advances to concentrate on her singles at Flushing Meadows.

Jankovic has made the right decision, but the world will miss all the fun and laughter that the Serbian-British pair brings. Read more »

Svetlana Kuznetsova wins Pilot Pen title when Agnes Szavay retires

svetlana-kuznetsova-wins-pilot-pen-1.jpgTop-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia won her first title this season when qualifier Agnes Szavay of Hungary retired with a back injury Saturday while leading 6-4, 0-3 at the Pilot Pen.

Agnes Szavay missed an opportunity to become the first qualifier to win a Tier I or Tier II tournament in WTA recorded history. The 18-year-old Hungarian was the third player to withdraw when playing against the Russian at the Pilot Pen — Francesca Schiavone dropped out with an ankle injury in the third round, while in the semifinal Elena Dementieva had to retire due to an upset stomach. Could this be called the Curse of Kuznetsova?

Henin wins Rogers Cup, beats Jankovic yet again

Top-seeded Justine Henin claimed her sixth title of the year with a thrilling 7-6(3), 7-5 victory over second-seeded Jelena Jankovic at the Rogers Cup presented by American Express in Toronto.

This match was Henin's seventh consecutive win over Jankovic. What a dominance! Even though the Serb is third-ranked player in the world, she has never found the way to beat the world number one. Still, every time these two players faced each other the level of tennis was excellent, and on five occasions they played three sets. In today's final, Jankovic again fought bravely, had her chances, but eventually succumbed to Henin's power.

Winning the Rogers Cup, the Belgian earned her thirty-fifth career title. (via On the Baseline)
