We all know how successful Jelena Jankovic has been in 2007. The Serb has risen to a career-high No. 3 and won titles on all surfaces — Auckland (hard), Charleston (clay), Rome (clay), and Birmingham (grass). There is only one player that Jelena has never defeated; that is world No. 1 Justine Henin, who was too strong for Jankovic in each of their six meetings.

At the Ordina Open on Thursday, defeating Alona Bondarenko in the quarterfinals, Jelena Jankovic won her 50th match of the year and became the first woman in over 30 years to achieve the feat that fast. In this way she has accompanied legends such as Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova.

The last time a player won 50 matches quicker than Jankovic was back in 1974, when Chris Evert reached that number of wins at Roland Garros. In 1978, Navratilova won 50 matches before Wimbledon, but it was in her third match at Eastbourne – Jankovic getting to 50 in her first match of the Wimbledon warm-up tournament gives her the better time.

“To win my 50th match of the year is amazing; I didn’t know I had this many. It just shows how well I’m playing and how consistent I am this season. When I go into a match I just give it my maximum. Maybe I can reach 100 wins this year!”

Just to mention that Jankovic has earned more points in 2007 than any other player, having 2850 points. The second place belongs to Justine Henin who has 2795 points (but note that Justine Henin is in the first place considering the prize money, having earned $2,208,222 in 2007, while Jankovic is third with more than a million less — $1,133,932).
